If a covered loss makes your home unlivable, the policy may help pay the extra cost of maintaining your normal standard of living while repairs are completed.

Additional Living Expenses (ALE), also called Loss of Use coverage, generally addresses qualifying expenses above your normal living costs.

What ALE May Cover

When ALE May Apply

ALE may apply when hurricane, water, fire, smoke or structural damage makes the home unsafe or unusable. Even partial conditions—such as no water, no electricity or major areas being inaccessible—may need to be evaluated.

How ALE Is Calculated

The carrier usually compares normal expenses with temporary expenses. For example, if normal groceries are $300 per month and eating out costs $800 while displaced, the additional $500 may be the relevant difference, subject to policy terms.

Protecting an ALE Claim

Keep every receipt

Save housing, food, transportation, storage and other displacement expenses.

Track normal spending

Document what you usually spend so the increased amount can be shown.

Document why the home is unlivable

Photograph unsafe or unusable living conditions.

Communicate carefully

Statements about whether the home can be occupied may affect ALE eligibility.

Important Reality About ALE

Carriers may limit duration, dispute whether the home is truly uninhabitable, push for cheaper alternatives or reject expenses as unnecessary. Documentation is essential.
